BRITANNIA HOUSE was a Bentley Estate farm of 41 acres The meadows (no spraying then) were lush and colourful with an abundance of vetch and other wild flowers.
In the fields behind Britannia House, about 50 yards from High Elms Lane, there used to be an old dwelling "Rose Cottage". It was demolished in 1938 by estate workmen and, as the thatch was removed, bats were seen flying out. It is also reported that a bomb dropped during the war on a field across the road from Common Barn Farm, which created a huge hole in the ground but no casualties.
